Under the Sea at the Theater

Coming up soon is Forever After Productions’ The Little Mermaid Jr.  Running March 21-26 at Canton‘s Village Theater, the show features amazing local talent.  This week we welcome guest blogger Melanie Gross, the show’s Director, to share with us a little about it.

About the Show

In a magical kingdom fathoms below, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above.  But first, she’ll have to defy her father King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula, and convince Prince Eric that she’s the girl with the enchanting voice.  Adapted from Disney’s 2008 Broadway production, Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID JR. features the hit songs “Part of Your World”, “She’s in Love”, and the Oscar-winning “Under the Sea.”

From the Director:  Melanie Gross

Although this is the first show I am directing, I have been working for Forever After for the past five years in a number of different roles- Stage Manager, Graphic Designer, and Summer Camp Coordinator. I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to direct one of the junior productions for a long time, but for the past four and a half years I was living in Grand Rapids and going to school at Grand Valley. Now that I’ve graduated and am back in the area, I’m very excited to be working on such a fun show!

Ursula's Tentacles

My, Ursula, what big tentacles you have!

This show also has our largest cast to date- 145 (i think!)- but they are so well behaved and talented that it really has been a breeze. The rehearsals have been going great and the sets look AMAZING- the only thing that has been difficult is costumes!

First, costuming that many kids is no easy task, especially when each musical number requires a different costume and every performer is sharing costumes with someone in the other cast. But on top of that, the costumes for this show are really extravagant so each one takes a lot of time to make. Luckily we have an awesome costume designer/coordinator- Linda Bracken- who has been working day and night to get everything ready. We also have the most amazing parents for this show who are jumping in and taking charge of all the random projects that need to get done between costumes and sets. We are very lucky to have them!
