Recently, I spoke with a friend who stared blankly at me when I referred to the classic childhood book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. How could it be? Is there actually someone who doesn’t know this story? And that was just it. This woman had not read it as a child. Now, as a mother, it was not on her radar as a classic and her two daughters have never heard of it.
Well, I like to think that my friend, who is one in a million in every way, is just that: the one person out of a million who has yet to fall in love with this story. So I was thrilled to hear that local youth theater group Foreverafter Productions is bringing the story to life as Willy Wonka Jr. hits the stage at Canton’s Village Theater at Cherry Hill in Canton Michigan, adjacent to the beautiful and unique Cherry Hill Village subdivision.

Roald Dahl’s 1964 classic story of kids and candy has evolved many times since its initial publication. From books and movies to plays and musicals, the tale is one known to children and adults all around the world. However, despite different character choices, scenery, and dialogue, the message remains the same: with optimism and honesty, dreams do come true.
Working with this cast has been a dream come true for me. With so many actors, it would have been easy for the performers to come for the socialization and forget the education. Instead, the actors and the production team created an inspiring mix of learning, art, and friendship that helped create the perfect atmosphere for putting on a show.
We have around 120 kids (60 in each cast), have been rehearsing since August 3 times per week, and have focused on learning through theatre games and character analysis.
