Today’s blog is kind of a mashup of different stuff going on: guest blogger, area farm, volunteerism, and a little about a local charter school. Whew!
Our Guest Blogger(s)
Carly Richards, one of the stellar Realtors here at The Bittinger Team, told us about a cool program promoted by her daughter’s school, Canton Charter Academy. Canton Charter Academy is located on Ford Road, just east of Denton. That’s west of Fellows Creek subdivision and Fox Run subdivision, and just north of Antique Forest and Vintage Valley subdivisions. Her daughter, Jenna, is going to tell us what her particular project entailed.
Carly Describes the Project
Canton Charter Academy requires that all of their middle school students do at least two hours of community service per trimester. Each month at CCA, they have a moral focus that they learn about at their morning assembly (middle school grades only attend assembly on Mondays and Fridays). After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, the student body recites the Canton Creed: “I am a Canton Academy Student. I can make a difference by doing my personal best. I will work hard, and practice good behavior. I will contribute all I can to my school and my community.” Once they have performed their community service, the students give an oral presentation to their class and have to relate it to one of the years’ moral focuses.
The Service
Carly’s daughter, Jenna, is a sixth grader at CCA and chose to perform her community service at Stein Wild Gardens. Stein Wild Gardens is a Gourmet CSA, which means that folks can purchase shares at the beginning of the season (spring) and then reap the farm’s during the growing season, usually weekly. What is available for each member depends on the time of year and can range from vegetables to herbs to flowers and even eggs or a chicken!
In Jenna’s Words
Who- I helped for community service Dylan Stockman, Heidi Stockman, Dale Jenson, and Laura Shope.
What- I helped at Stein Wild Gardens. I helped fix the holes in the chicken wire electric fence and I put hay around plants so the weeds would die and would not come up.
When- I did it on May 27, 2012 10am-12pm.
Where- I helped at Stein Wild Gardens.
Why- I helped Stein Wild Gardens because I like to help out with planting and I love farms so I like what I’m doing but I’m helping the community also.
How- I helped by fixing the electric fence holes with zip ties and I put hay around plants so the weeds would not grow or kill the plants.
The moral focus I used was perseverance I picked perseverance because I had to preserver to go out in the hot sun and get all dirty for community service.
Thanks!
Way to go, Jenna! Thanks for filling us in about your school and Stein Wild Gardens, and for sharing your photos! How cool is it that we have a place like this so close by?!
