Attention Canton Home Sellers: These Things Are Guaranteed to Cost You A Sale

When it comes to marketing your Canton home for sale, you can either attract home buyer attention for the right reasons or for the wrong reasons.

For today’s Canton real estate blog, I’m going to tell you about some common things that quickly turn buyers off from a home.

If you find that any of these features apply to your home, you may consider getting them fixed before you list your home on the Canton real estate market.

Top Problems That Will Immediately Turn Off a Potential Canton Buyer

Foul odors. This is probably the quickest way to fail a showing. If buyers don’t even feel comfortable breathing through their nose in your home, what makes you think they’re going to want to live there? Common culprits include stale cigarette smoke, mildew, pet odors and more.

Unrestrained pets. Some people just don’t like cats or dogs. Others are scared of them. So if you don’t want Fido to ruin a potential sale for you, then take him out of the house during showings. If that’s not possible, put him in his crate so that home buyers don’t have to worry about him.

Poorly lit rooms. As I’ve mentioned before, well-lit rooms make them seem larger and more inviting. Poorly lit rooms do the opposite. So ensure there’s sufficient light by replacing old light bulbs and opening curtains. For really dark rooms, you may consider taking extra steps such as painting the room with a lighter color.

Dirty Bathrooms. Soap scum, foul smells, rings in the toilet – all of these things are going to gross out any potential home buyer and leave a negative impression of your home in their minds. So do everything you can to make sure your bathroom is spic-and-span – from scrubbing the toilet bowl to putting up a new shower curtain.

Damp Basements. Buyers will typically assume that if the basement is damp or even damp smelling, then something must be wrong with the foundation. And no home buyer is going to want to invest in a home with a faulty foundation. If you think you may have a moisture problem in your basement, hire someone to take a look at it to determine if you really do have a problematic foundation or if something is wrong with your home’s water run-off system.

Bugs. From spiders to ants, bugs inside a home signal to buyers that the property is dirty and hasn’t been well maintained.

No curb appeal. Buyers are judging your home before they ever step foot inside. So make sure your home’s exterior is appealing by trimming the hedges, cleaning out the gutters, mowing the lawn and clearing the driveway.
