It is our pleasure to welcome Barbara Bloom as our guest blogger this week. Barbara is the Managing Director of the local theater company, Spotlight on Youth, and tell us about their upcoming production.
In Rehearsal For BYE, BYE, BIRDIE
Spotlight on Youth will be taking the stage at the beautiful Village Theater at Cherry Hill on May 31 and through June 4 with the feel-good 1950’s rock and roll “Bye, Bye, Birdie”. Area youth are now in rehearsal singing such songs as “Put on a Happy Face”, “Lot of Livin’ to Do” and “Kids”. This musical was a huge success on Broadway and was made into several movie versions as its appeal is universal and its energy exciting.
With music and lyrics by Charles Strouse and Lee Adams and book by Mike Stewart, “Bye, Bye, Birdie” takes us back to a time when all of America spent every Sunday evening watching Ed Sullivan on their 17-inch television screens, when Elvis Presley was the “king of rock and roll” and when poodles skirts were all the rage!
This story finds Conrad Birdie being inducted into the army (aka Elvis). His manager, Albert Peterson and his secretary/sweetheart, Rose Alvarez devise a plan to send him off after kissing a loyal fan, Kim MacAfee while singing his new hit song, “One Last Kiss”. The musical is set in New York and Sweet Apple, OH. You will meet and enjoy screaming teen-age fans of Birdie and their dubious parents that can’t understand this phenomenon at all!”
