Is “Home Sweet Home” still Sweet?

Buyers still look for that "Home Of Their Own"

According to Dictionary.com,  the word “home” can be a noun, adjective, verb, or adverb and has 32 different groups of definitions in those categories.

Homeowners and soon-to-be-homeowners usually think of home as the centerpiece of a good life. In today’s challenging market there are many more things to consider before the typical buyer feels ready to make that purchasing decision.

Ask several Canton and Plymouth residents to define the meaning of home and you will likely get different answers like:

A place to bring up the family.

A retreat.

A place to get away from a harried world.

A place to gather with family and friends.

And for the unemotional … a place to hang my hat.

But the common denominator for all is having a place to call your own.

Achieving and maintaining homeownership has become more challenging these days, but the underlying reason to want it remains the same …  we want a place where our lives and everyday experiences can unfold and a space to inhabit with the people and things that mean the most to us.

In today’s challenging real estate market, it takes more than square footage and granite countertops to motivate home buyers. Most are concerned not only with the emotional aspects but also whether the purchase makes sense financially and practically.

Periods of economic downturn offer a chance to step back and reevaluate the way things were in the past vs. the way things are in today’s real estate market. Necessity is the mother of a buyer’s decision to buy, but now reality is the father. Consumers are re-prioritizing and are focusing on what really matters to them. Home as an investment has taken a back seat to livability … the new, more practical motivator.

Finding a home that’s not too big, not too small, but “just right” for them is not just a pie in the sky request …  it’s what people are seeking. Flexible floor plans, economical use of space, or even using typical spaces in atypical ways allow buyers to plug their lifestyle right into a home and imagine the possibilities beyond the obvious. Possibilities like … I don’t need an extra bedroom, I need a really big closet!
