Before winter even starts – or at the very least, at the beginning of winter, make sure to have your furnace checked and serviced by a licensed contractor. You should also clean and replace your furnace filter on forced hot air system, and have you chimney checked and serviced.

Once you’re deep within the winter season, here are some additional home maintenance tips to keep in mind:

  • When travelling, set your heat to no lower than 55 degrees. This will help prevent water pipes from bursting. Also, open doors to unoccupied rooms to help keep air flowing evenly throughout.
  • Make sure to inspect and upgrade insulation as well as weather stripping to ensure maximum efficiency.
  • Add extra insulation to the attic, which will help guard against ice dams.
  • Add weather stripping across doors and caulk windows to prevent drafts and heat loss.
  • Where appropriate, remove screens from windows and install storm windows.
  • Learn how to shut off your water as well as how to locate your pipes in case they freeze. This will help prevent water damage.
  • Trim trees and remove dead branches to prevent them from causing damage to your home or hurting someone because of ice, snow or wind.
  • Keep the gutters clean of leaves and sticks, which will help ensure that melting snow drains properly.
  • Repair stairs and handrails to ensure that they are safer to use during ice and snow events.
  • Make sure your smoke detectors, fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.
  • Ensure you have snow shovels and a roof rake on hand to be prepared for the next big storm.
