Top Reasons Why People Decide It’s Time to Sell Their Plymouth MI Home

As an experienced Plymouth REALTOR, I’ve helped scores of home owners over the years successfully sell their Wayne County home.

Through all of those real estate transactions, one thing is clear: There are about a million and one reasons why people ultimately decide to sell their home.

Today, I’m going to tell you about some of the top reasons why Plymouth home owners have decided to move over the years.

Properties for Sale in Plymouth, MI

Here are some of the most-often cited reasons for why a Plymouth home owner decides to list their property:

  • Their home is too small. This is particularly true for first-time home buyers who may purchase a starter home initially and then decide later that they’re ready to start a family. All of a sudden, their two-bedroom townhome just isn’t big enough!
  • They’re experiencing a change in relationship status. Whether they’re getting married or getting divorced, a change in relationship status has made their current home unsuitable for their needs.
  • They’re empty nesters. When all of your children have gone off on their own, why would you need a five-bedroom home in Plymouth? Many home buyers in this situation opt to downsize. After all, it’s less money and less maintenance.
  • They have a health ailment that affects their mobility. For elderly individuals, it may be difficult to climb stairs as much as they used to. Thus, some may opt to trade their two-story home for a ranch.
  • They want to upgrade. Isn’t that the American Dream? You work your way up the corporate ladder, gain more money and prestige, and buy a new and bigger house to celebrate. I see it all the time!
  • Their job has transferred. Sometimes a job transfer will take a person out of the state or even out of the country. But even if the transfer is relatively local, most people aren’t going to want to commute more than an hour both ways to their newly relocated job.
  • They want to move to be closer to family. Perhaps a couple in their 50s wants to be closer to their elderly parents or new parents want to move to be closer to relatives for help raising their child.
  • They want to move to get away from family. For some families, the saying “Absence makes the heart grow fonder” hits close to home!
  • They’re retiring. Maybe they want to move to a warmer locale or they simply want to relocate to an active adult community in order to be closer to people their age.
  • They want to defer maintenance. Repairing such large home features as the roof can cost more than $10,000. Some home owners would prefer to instead invest in a new home then fork over money for repairs on their current home.
  • They want to free up some cash. Home owners tie up a lot of their money in home purchases. Some people get to the point where they’d rather have the money than own the plot of land.
  • They want to pursue a more free-spirited lifestyle. It’s much easier to travel the world and live by the seat of your pants when you’re not tied to a mortgage and a piece of property in a specific city.
