More than 40 million U.S. households – or about 40 percent of the population – own at least one dog.
If you’re one of those people whose life has been graced with a canine companion – and you live in the Detroit, Michigan area – I have great news for you!
The town of Canton recently announced the opening of the Canton Dog Park. This 5-acre, off-leash dog park has two separate areas. One area is for those dogs that are more than 20 pounds and the other is for those less than 20 pounds.
The park also features benches for dog owners as well as a double-gated entrance to discourage canine escape artists.
Hours of operation will be from dawn to dusk.
“We are excited to have this new dog park open in Canton,” said Debi Greene, member of the Friends of the Canton Dog Park, in a press release. “Our group has worked tirelessly to raise the necessary funds to construct this new park which will allow dog lovers to exercise their pets in a great open space.”

Canton area residents are invited to celebrate this wonderful addition to the community at a ribbon cutting ceremony.
- When: 6:30 to 9 p.m. on May 20
- Where: Canton Dog Park, on Denton Road just north of Cherry Hill Road and across from Canton Fire Station #3.
- Admission: Event is free. Membership to the dog park is $25 annually for residents and $50 annually for non-residents. Yearly fees cover up to three dogs per family. All dogs must be at least 4 months old, licensed and up-to-date on all their shots.
- More Info: There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony followed by light refreshments. Dog and animal vendors will also be on site to hand out donated goody bags to dogs and dog lovers alike.

The Canton Dog Park is the culmination of three years of work by dog owners interested in bringing a dog park to the area.
